Chapter Thirty-Three

Someone was shaking my shoulders as they called my name.

“Harlowe, Harlowe, can you hear me?”

The scene playing out around me was all too familiar. My head was perched in Silas’s lap, and I could hear Emmerson nearby demanding he stop shaking me. I groaned and rolled to my side as I pushed myself up.

A small bite of pain hummed at the base of my throat and my hand instinctively flew to the site. I could feel warm liquid beneath my fingers and when I pulled them away to inspect them, they were coated crimson.

“Oh gods,” I whispered. “It was real.”

“What did you say, Harlowe? What was real?” Silas asked.

I straightened, suddenly alert. “Kieran,” I whispered.

Silas stiffened, and Emmerson narrowed her eyes. Casting a glance around the room, I could see everyone was awake and had been observing Silas’s efforts to rouse me.

“Why is everyone awake? And why are you all staring at me?” I asked, as my cheek heated.

“You were thrashing in your sleep and moaning as though you were in pain,” Silas answered.

I glanced around and realized I was, indeed, sprawled out on Silas’s bed roll.

“Why am I in your bed?” I demanded as I glared at him. “I distinctly recall going to sleep over there.” I pointed toward my abandoned bedroll.

Silas merely shrugged and grinned unapologetically, eliciting a growl of frustration from me.

“What happened, Harlowe? Why are you bleeding?” Zeke asked, concern evident in his tone.

“Kieran somehow pulled me into a dream. I don’t understand the mechanics of it, so don’t ask,” I said as Emmerson opened her mouth to do just that.

“But why are you bleeding?” Zeke pressed.

“He held a dagger to my throat.”

Silas released a feral snarl behind me at the same time Emmerson swore under her breath.

“What did he want?” Cillian asked, redirecting the conversation.

“Same thing as before. He wants me to marry him and bind myself to him.”

There was a collection of muttering, and Emmerson swore again.

“Marry me,” Silas said, as he pulled me closer to him.

Deafening silence met his words as everyone stopped talking to gape at him.

I slowly turned to meet his gaze. “What did you just say?” I asked, sure I heard him wrong.

“You heard me. Marry me.”

“You’re being serious, aren’t you?” I asked, bewildered.

“You know I don’t play around when it comes to you, Little Menace,” he replied.

“And pray tell, why the hell would I do that?” If Silas was surprised by my outburst, he didn’t show it.

“If I marry you, then Kieran won’t be able to use you in that way,” he said.

“Oh, right,” I said sardonically. “While we’re at it, we can send your father an invitation to let him know that his son married the bride he intended for his brother, just so August couldn’t,” I mocked.

“August was never going to marry you,” Silas growled. “In any case, it kills two birds with one stone.”

Cillian winced and Fionn retreated a step. Emmerson wore a grin that was pure mischief, and Zeke’s shoulders shook with quiet laughter.

“Two birds, with one stone,” I repeated slowly.
